Homeland Security and Their New Idea

I decided to change up my writing this week because of some of the past events that have been happening this week.

Everyone uses social media all around the world. Since Donald Trump has been president he has made it very clear, immigration should be eliminated. If or when this day happens, according to US Homeland Security, social media could be the next way EVERY current or prospective immigrant is monitored. This means there would be a mass computer monitoring system that would monitor every tweet, post, update, and picture that an immigrant says. Then US Homeland Security would look at the databases “bad tweets”, who refer to possible terrorist activity.

In my opinion, this is just insane. For so many reasons.

First: I am currently taking a college course about racism and injustice about anyone that is not male and white. What Homeland Security wants to do is the definition of injustice. Not every person that immigrates here wants to commit a terrorist act. I understand US Homeland Security’s job and how they want to prevent anything awful that could occur but I just do not think monitoring every immigrant is the way to fix criminal acts.

Second: Not every attack happens from immigrants. Las Vegas is a great example. It happened a few days ago. He killed 59 innocent victims. He was a white male, the only gender and race combination who normally do not experience racism and injustice. US Homeland Security should try to push a law saying you cannot buy 20 automatic weapons, but hey that is just my opinion.

Third: How is US Homeland Security going to go, arrest, and question every immigrant who tweets a questionable thing? It is impossible. I personally think they need to look at the bigger picture. Maybe some things need to change like security overall and gun laws. Everyone is saying, “Las Vegas will change hotel security”. Well, guess what, maybe we should change school security, mall security, restaurant security, and etc. We changed airport security after 9/11. Does America have to experience an act of violence for security to be implemented?

According to News Scientist, US Homeland’s idea would never work because of there being way too many immigrants per US Homeland Security personnel. It would not be possible for a computer to decide on the bad tweets.

Social media is great for personal and business reasons, but for now, I think it should stay that way. I can see how social media could be helpful if someone is suspicious to see what they post and their friends if a criminal act is committed. I just do not think social media should be the next way US Homeland Security tries to catch the bad guys.

What is your opinion? I want to hear it! This is a very controversial topic. Comment!
